Sculpture Course
This course is addressed both to those who are not experienced with sculpture and to those who wish to improve their acquired skills.
Participants will be introduced to clay modeling techniques, disclosing new possibilities of expression that will stimulate the creative sense residing in each of us, that can manifest itself through matter and become Sculpture.
This journey will lead to the realization of a work in the round or a low-
The course will be divided in two different parts; in the first one the presence of a real model (or a plaster one) will allow a varied anatomical study of the human face.
In this phase the student will acquire the perception of planes and volumes of the face and a technical-
In the second part the technical stages of clay modeling will be explained, in order to realize the final piece. Conclusively, the student will learn and practice the plaster molding technique, to transfer the work in a variety of materials, and the terracotta modeling technique.
First part:
_ Anatomical drawing of a human face
_ Explanation of planes and volumes
Second part: sculpture and modeling techniques
Starting from a preparatory study (for example a portrait), we will build an armature, made out of wood or metal rods and wire, intended to hold the clay, and then we’ll proceed directly to mold the material, following the basic techniques for the realization of an in the round work.
The reproduction of this model will be realized later through the so-
In the first phase, it will be realized a “negative”, also said “a forma perduta”, that will be reinforced by metal rods, to increase his stability during the making.
In the second phase, through the negative, it will be possible to realize the “positive”, in different materials such as clay, wax, cement, plastic resin or ceramic chalk, obtaining a finished and long lasting piece.
Otherwise, using the ancient terracotta technique, clay sculptures can be made out of a single block or through a wooden armature.
In this case the sculpture can be coated and coloured after being fired.
INTRODUCED TECHNIQUES:
_Clay modeling
_Forming technique, “a forma persa” (only one reproduction)
_”Positive” realization technique (various materials)
_Terracotta technique (through drying and emptying)
_Polychrome coats, on plaster and terracotta
